Czechia are not a team that overwhelm you with glamour, but they know exactly how they can hurt opponents: Schick as the box reference, Soucek attacking second balls, Krejci leading the back line and Koubek restoring edge after a dramatic play-off route. In Group A, their danger is being dragged into faster, looser games. Their best version lives in duels, set pieces and first contacts inside the box.
Green Pitch Oracle
Pre-match analysis
This should not be written as a vague dark-horse story. Czechia's value lies in a clear football logic: Schick gives them a first contact, Soucek turns second balls into sustained pressure, and Krejci stabilises the defensive mood. The weakness is just as clear. If the first pass out of midfield is loose, Korea's pace, Mexico's home pressure and South Africa's counters can make them run too much.
His hold-up play, finishing and penalty-box instinct are the clearest Czech route to goal. But if opponents block the crossing lane, Sulc, Provod or Hlozek must provide an extra half-space connection.
Czechia cannot afford to become a one-cross team. If Soucek controls the second contact, one attack becomes two or three waves.
In the European play-offs, Krejci scored decisive goals and dragged the team back from chaos. That leadership and set-piece threat matter even more in a tight group.
Czechia do not have the luxury of warming into this group. Korea test the space behind the back line, South Africa look like the points-management match, and Mexico in Mexico City brings heat, altitude and crowd pressure together.
10:00 Beijing time on 12 June 2026 in Guadalajara. Czechia must slow Korea's wide pace and drag the match toward duels and set pieces.
00:00 Beijing time on 19 June 2026 in Atlanta. This is the match Czechia should treat as a serious points job, not an open transition game.
09:00 Beijing time on 25 June 2026 in Mexico City. The crowd will heat the game up, so Czechia need to make it harder, slower and more direct.
The natural shape moves between 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-2-1. A back four gives more midfield and crossing structure, while a back three lets Krejci, Hranac and Holes protect the box. Either way, Schick is the first reference, Soucek is the second-ball engine, and Coufal plus Jurasek have to supply real delivery.
The risk is distance. If Czechia drop too deep, Schick becomes isolated. If they push too high, Korea and Mexico can attack the space behind the full-backs. Koubek's real task is not finding height; it is making sure there is a second and third action after the first contact.
As of 23 May 2026, Czechia have not named the final 26. FIFA confirms Koubek has selected a 29-player provisional squad, with Schick, Soucek, Krejci, Sulc, Kovar and Coufal among the core names. Hlozek's return from injury gives the front line a different layer, but the Kosovo friendly should tell us more about his intensity. Doudera and Chory also carry match-rhythm questions after suspensions.
Matej Kovar, Lukas Hornicek, Jindrich Stanek
Vladimir Coufal, David Doudera, Tomas Holes, Robin Hranac, Stepan Chaloupek, David Jurasek, Ladislav Krejci, Jaroslav Zeleny, David Zima
Pavel Bucha, Lukas Cerv, Vladimir Darida, Tomas Ladra, Lukas Provod, Michal Sadilek, Hugo Sochurek, Alexandr Sojka, Tomas Soucek, Pavel Sulc, Denis Visinsky
Adam Hlozek, Tomas Chory, Mojmir Chytil, Christophe Kabongo, Jan Kuchta, Patrik Schick
If Koubek wants defensive security first, the back three looks like the most natural tournament starting point. Krejci can lead from central or left centre-back, Coufal and Jurasek provide width, Soucek protects the second ball, and Sulc plus Provod connect play around Schick. If Hlozek is sharp enough, he can push for a second-striker or left half-space role.
Group A is not brutal on paper, but it can punish bad judgement. Korea have pace, South Africa have discipline, and Mexico have the home edge. If Czechia reach the final round with only one point, Mexico City becomes uncomfortable. If they take four from the first two games, their duels and set pieces can make the finale a real ranking battle.
Green Pitch Oracle's read is that Czechia's most interesting question is not whether they can look beautiful. It is whether they can keep their football order under World Cup pressure. Schick, Soucek and Krejci form a very tournament-like spine: not flashy, but capable of changing a match with one aerial duel, second ball or set piece.
If Korea run them open, the next two matches become heavy. If Czechia make it physical first, Group A becomes very practical very quickly.
Crosses matter, but Sulc and Provod must add ground connections so Schick is not simply boxed in by two centre-backs.
Czechia may not dominate possession, but if the dead-ball delivery is right, Krejci and Soucek will make every opponent uncomfortable.
FIFA's 1 April 2026 men's ranking places Czechia 41st. That is not elite territory, but it does confirm they are more than a romantic play-off story.
