Venue Dallas Stadium

Venue Monterrey Stadium

Venue Dallas Stadium

JPN · Group F · 2026 World Cup team analysis

Without Mitoma, Japan need rotation and pressing to steal Group F rhythm

Japan have moved beyond the old technical-underdog label. They can control, press and compete with European teams at tempo. But Kaoru Mitoma's absence removes the cleanest left-side one-v-one threat, and Takumi Minamino's omission takes away another layer of attacking experience.

Japan key read:Japan are not passive outsiders; the Mitoma absence changes their attacking balance.

Squad status

Start with the confirmed frame, then wait for the final list

Japan status: 26-player squad announced, FIFA final list pending. Hajime Moriyasu's core structure is clear, but the goalkeeper order, bench hierarchy and fitness picture still need final-list confirmation.

Back line

Itakura, Tomiyasu, Watanabe and Sugawara allow both back-four and back-three shapes.

Midfield

Endo is the captain and counter-pressing insurance; Tanaka, Kamada and Sano connect play.

Attack

Kubo, Doan, Ueda, Maeda and Nakamura must share the creative load without Mitoma.

Analyst notes

This page is analysis, not a database card

My read on Japan starts with spacing, transition control and whether the key positions can hold up at World Cup tempo, not only star value.

Technical discipline 8.8

Japan can keep rhythm under pressure

Front pressing 8.2

Doan, Kubo and Maeda can create second attacks

Left-side threat 6.5

Mitoma's absence forces a rotation solution

Set-piece defending 6.6

Sweden will test this hard

My pre-match read

Japan: the real read is deeper than the squad list

My read on Japan is not about an underdog upset. They can drag European opponents into their tempo. The problem is clear too: no Mitoma means less direct left-side threat, and the core defenders need fitness management. If Kubo, Doan and Kamada rotate cleanly, Japan can fight for Group F's top two.

Japan are beyond the upset label

Japan should not be written as a simple Asian underdog. They can press, control and drag European opponents into compact passing games.

Survive the Dutch transition phase

Against the Netherlands, Japan must protect the space in front of Endo before chasing the full-backs aggressively.

Mitoma's absence rewrites the left side

Without Mitoma, Japan need Nakamura, Kubo and the full-back overlaps to replace the one-v-one threat collectively.

The group route is clear

A point against the Dutch opens the group. If not, Tunisia becomes must-win and Sweden becomes the aerial and set-piece exam.

Key player reads

Not a name list: how each role changes the match

Midfield insurance

Endo

His positioning after turnovers decides whether Japan can survive second-ball pressure.

Creative rewrite

Kubo

Without Mitoma, Kubo has to move inside more often and create from half-spaces.

Big-game execution

Doan

His defensive work and first pass in transition can change Japan's attacking rhythm.

Defensive health

Itakura / Tomiyasu

Their fitness decides how high Japan can defend.

Projected XI

Not official: this is a pre-match judgement from the current squad picture

Before the final squad and fitness updates, this XI must remain a projection. The cards show shape, roles and fallback options, not an official lineup.

Strengths

  • Mature passing discipline under pressure.
  • Flexible attackers who can rotate through half-spaces.
  • A defensive group that can shift between back-four and back-three structures.

Risks

  • Mitoma's absence weakens the left-side one-v-one threat.
  • Minamino's omission removes a layer of experience.
  • Set pieces against Sweden could expose aerial limits.
