Korea Republic are not a team carried by one headline name. Son Heungmin, Lee Kangin and Kim Minjae remain the obvious spine, but the more interesting question is how Hong Myungbo turns a highly international squad, a back-three Plan B and real attacking talent into something stable enough for tournament football. Group A is not a pure group of death, but it can expose loose details very quickly.
Green Pitch Oracle
Pre-match analysis
The familiar spine is still there. Son provides the ceiling, Lee Kangin provides craft, and Kim Minjae provides defensive authority. But group football is rarely decided by name value alone. Korea's real problem is tempo: can they control games when ahead, stay calm when behind, and protect the first pass out of pressure against Mexico's home intensity and Czechia's aerial game?
Son's movement, transition running and finishing are still Korea's most valuable weapons. If every attack waits for him to provide the final action, opponents can narrow the game too easily.
Lee's value is not only the final pass. He gives Korea pauses, switches and half-space quality, which matters against low blocks and physical midfields.
Hong's back-three work is about giving the team another safety layer. Kim's coverage lets Korea defend higher, but the side centre-backs and wing-backs must still recover properly.
Korea's three games test different things. Czechia will test aerial defending and second balls, Mexico will bring home pressure and tempo, while South Africa can drag the match into a low-scoring contest.
10:00 Beijing time on 12 June 2026. Korea need early control because Czechia become more dangerous the longer set pieces and second balls define the match.
09:00 Beijing time on 19 June 2026. Mexico at home will not give Korea comfortable build-up time. Midfield resistance and wide recovery are the keys.
02:00 Beijing time on 25 June 2026. South Africa may not dominate the ball, but they can punish loose set-piece defending and rushed attacks.
Korea's regular strength is that all three lines contain players who understand high-level football. A back four makes it easier to fit Lee Kangin, Hwang Heechan, Lee Jaesung and Son into the attacking structure. A back three gives Kim Minjae more protection and lets wing-backs push higher. These are not opposite identities; they are match-state tools.
The risk sits behind midfield and outside the centre-backs. If Korea press too eagerly, Kim can be forced into too many emergency actions. If they sit too cautiously, Lee and Son start too far away from goal. To advance from Group A, Korea need mature tempo switching more than a perfect drawing-board formation.
Korea Republic announced their 26-player World Cup squad on 16 May 2026. Son Heungmin, Kim Minjae, Lee Kangin, Hwang Heechan, Lee Jaesung and Hwang Inbeom are all included. FIFA still states that all squads are provisional until the final list publication after team submissions on 2 June, so the page should not sound more final than the official process allows. Hwang Inbeom's ankle recovery, Son's starting role and the back-three/four-back decision remain the main pre-match watch points.
Song Bumkeun, Jo Hyeonwoo, Kim Seunggyu
Kim Minjae, Cho Yumin, Lee Hanbeom, Park Jinseob, Lee Kihyuk, Kim Taehyeon, Lee Taeseok, Seol Youngwoo, Kim Moonhwan, Jens Castrop
Hwang Inbeom, Paik Seungho, Lee Jaesung, Lee Kangin, Kim Jingyu, Bae Junho, Eom Jisung, Lee Donggyeong, Yang Hyunjun, Hwang Heechan
Son Heungmin, Cho Guesung, Oh Hyeongyu
The most natural opening shape keeps Kim Minjae at the centre of the defence, asks Hwang Inbeom or Paik Seungho to handle first build-up, uses Lee Kangin and Lee Jaesung as connectors, and lets Son move between the left side and the striker lane. If Hong chooses the back three, Korea gain protection but lose one attacking slot.
Group A does not contain an impossible superpower, but it also has no opponent Korea can ignore. The best route is to beat or at least avoid defeat against Czechia, take something from Mexico, and make sure the South Africa match is not a must-win scramble.
Korea are no longer an Asian side living on surprise value. Consecutive World Cup appearances, a deeper overseas group and strong names in every line all raise expectations. The challenge now is turning that maturity on paper into group-stage results.
If Korea ask Son to drop deep, carry the ball and finish every attack, his efficiency drops. Lee Kangin and Lee Jaesung have to move the final pass closer to him.
When opponents sit narrow, Korea need more than wide speed. Lee's receiving, turning and through balls are the details that can unlock compact games.
If Korea's press is bypassed too easily, even Kim's range will be drained. Their defence depends on team distance, not only one elite centre-back.
A strong opener moves the page toward a top-two narrative. Dropped points shift the emphasis to Mexico risk and South Africa final-round calculations.
